Microsoft has appealed an €899 million ($1.39 billion) fine levied against it by the European Commission for failure to comply with an 2004 antitrust ruling. The software giant is asking the Court of First Instance to overturn 488 days of fines levied by the EC for not living up to the Commission's insistence that Microsoft fully document and license its server protocols at reasonable rates.

What ? Getting designers feedback has been difficult !

As an author, I wish I could vote for CSS3 modules. I'd do anything to have the css2 layout problems fixed.

I vote for Advanced Layout, and Multi-Column Layout. Make them top priority !

nb: I'd actually like a powerful and general purpose layout system (java GridBagLayout anyone), but *sigh* that's another problem.

Matt: It should have said Molly or Zeldman, but I accidentally missed the closing >. I used a rather loose definition of Designer, because even if you don't consider her a designer, she is in the right position to be able to pin point the right people as you say, and knows the issues designers face as well as most people.

Good write up, and it's nice to see a plan of action that makes sense. Your last four points I could not agree with more!

A couple of points however:

Molly, as awesome as she is, is not a designer, nor (I think) would she claim to be. She may be well placed to call upon a few actual designers however.

The issue with transparency and good communication isn't merely about the resources being there, or about publishing meeting notes. The trouble is it's so hard to find the resources that already exist too! For example, I had no idea that the CSS blog existed until a week or so ago. I had no idea at all about the request for feedback that had been put out. And I'm a standards aware designer with a keen interest, who follows numerous respected designers and coder's blogs. Why isn't this stuff splattered on the W3C homepage? A "Work In Progress" section with a few select links to various projects perhaps? Basically, the w3c homepage is a mess unless you know exactly what you're looking for - but as most of the public don't know how the W3C works, we don't know what we're looking for.

An overhaul of the w3C site itself would be a nice thing to see (though I'd not expect it to be a high priority, considering everything else that needs doing).

Thank you for writing a plan of action!

The CSSWG plans to discuss its charter at our next face-to-face meeting in March. If groups like CSS3.info, the CSS Eleven, and the WaSP and/or individuals like Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer could organize a collectively-written list of priorities and submit it to us before then, we could take that into account when writing our charter for 2008+.
