What a douchebag! Hey @N, hate to break it to you, but as you were using the internet in the past year, you've had CSS tell your computer what font to use when viewing a website, you've had JavaScript tell your computer what size and dimensions to open your browser window, you've had Java access your C: drive to browse for files to upload to Facebook, you've had HTML command your computer to open up mailto: links. Your computer is constantly being controlled and told what to do by websites whether you realise it or not.

@People arguing about CLearType:
ClearType can easily be controlled locally, so it could easily be implemented as a CSS property, and it could follow the same rules of inheritance as everything else.
It is not necessarily a system-wide property.

Currently, it really does often make a lot of sense to disable it, since it does do weird stuff. It might also be a good idea to implement a more accurate antialiasing scheme like Apple's AA. On the other hand, Direct Write (In Windows 7) is a pretty good solution, so it may become a non-issue.

But on topic, I'd like to see more on the Webkit extensions, especially now that they are being added to the official specs!

I played with CSS3 with this particular post: http://libregame.gameshogun.ws/8gametitles/secret-maryo-chronicles
(yes, plug)

Because I was curious as to which features are currently supported by each browsers.

My recent checking today, Safari 4 Beta and FireFox 3.1 Beta 2 are at par with each other at least from my own test page. While Opera 10 is almost there.

I do not know about IE8, I'm still going to download it. Currently, I'm planning on creating a new (personal) test page, combining HTML5 and CSS Level 3. (Anyone who have an existing one online?)

This is kind of random, but it came up the other day while working on a project... As I understand it the standard way of putting one object in front of the other is the z-index. I think it would be cool too see a fore-ground property in CSS3 Making it easy to layer items within one element.

Also, if you add some color change to the element for hover, ClearType will actually start moving the individual characters of the text like it's not sure where to render the text between the hover states. Put that on a web page and people will for sure think something is wrong with the page.

It drives me crazy, especially because I just made some admin menus that uses this. It looks really nice AND is actually very functional because I needed the menu to kind of move away a little from what was under it. Then I discover ClearType.... and then that Safari 4 Beta has turned ClearType on by default on Windows... What a waste.

Back to the old, or back to image-text... (which we all love, of course).

Have you guys seen text rotated 15 degrees (or whatever) using ClearType? It looks just plain ugly. It's like the text tries to stay horizontal but at the same time tries to be rotated. And the readability is completely gone.

ClearType by nature is not designed for text that is not horizontal, as ClearType's main purpose is to alter the font so that it fits the pixels on the physical screen. At least it doesn't seem to be able to adjust for text on a angle.

The way I see it, the only way to get decent looking text when it's rotated is to some how disable ClearType and render it with normal antialising. Mac's don't have this problem because Mac OS's font renderer doesn't try to screw with the fonts.

Try this on some element containing some text:

style="-webkit-transform: rotate(15deg)"

Compare in Safari for Mac and Safari 4 on Windows with Font Smoothing set to Windows Standard.

Or for Firefox 3.1b2:

style="-moz-transform: rotate(15deg)"

Compare the same on Firefox for Mac and for Windows.

The difference is huge. ClearType just screws it up and makes it unusable (it just looks too weird).
